Santa Fe, New Mexico

Selected in 1610 as the capital by the newly appointed governor Don Pedro de Peralta, Santa Fe was originally known as La Villa Real de Santa Fe de San Francisco de Asis, "The Royal City of the Holy Faith of St. Francis of Assisi", and is the oldest continuous seat of government in the United States. By 1617, over 14,000 Indians in the area had been converted to Catholicism, and it retains much of its Catholic history. It central plaza remains a center of commerce, festivals and history, featuring the Santa Fe Opera, chamber music, dance, theater and art markets, including the August Indian market.
