Founded
by Mormon pioneers in the early 1880's, this community at 7,200 feet is
ten miles
southeast of Show Low, and is known for extensive recreational
activities and nearness to the world's largest stand of Ponderosa
pines. On the edge of the Mogollon Rim and surrounded by the White
Mountains and the Apache-Sitgreaves National forest, popular activities
include golf, birding, hiking, fishing, hunting, Hon-Dah Resort Casino,
horseback riding and camping in warmer months and cross-country skiing
and ice fishing in the winter. The Sunrise Ski Resort is
nearby. The Jacques Marsh provides
seasonal habitat for migrating waterfowl, bald eagles and peregrine
falcons and attracts grazing elk.

In Lakeside near Hwy. 260 and Wagon Wheel Ln. High in the pines of the White Mountains, this inn combines classic amenities with home away from home comfort. It has elegant hardwood floors throughout, and large windows take in the view of the pine forest. There are one 1st-floor
($135) and three 2nd-floor ($150) guest rooms, each tastefully decorated with queen bed, private bath, writing table and views of the oak and pine studded property. One has an additional sofa-sleeper to accommodate 2 children (add $15/night/child). The guest loft has TV and an assortment of games and books. Full home-cooked breakfast is served family-style in the dining room. Supervised children 10+ welcome, no pets, smoking outdoors only. Horses can be boarded on the property (add $15/night/horse).
