Jerome, Arizona

Named for its principal financier, Eugene Murray Jerome, the cousin of Sir Winston Churchill's mother, Jennie Jerome,  this "Wickedest Town In The West" was  a booming copper mining camp of 15,000 at the turn of the century, with 21 bars, 13 hotels and 8 houses of prostitution. By 1953 the mines had all closed and this whistle stop became "America’s most unique ghost city", home to an eclectic mix of writers artists and musicians whose wares fill the shops and galleries. Perched on the side of Mingus Mountain, there are fantastic views overlooking the Verde Valley and distant mountain ranges. Today visitors enjoy quaint shops, galleries, historic buildings, and the Sliding Jail, which came to rest here after a particularly violent cave-in. Jerome Historic State Park was once the mansion of mining magnate Jimmy "Rawhide" Douglas, and offers lovely gardens and a treasure house of historical data and displays of Jerome's former mining days. There is also the Gold King Mine and museum. Sycamore Canyon tempts the hiker and Peck's Lake for the bird watcher is just down the mountain, and nearby attractions include Montezuma Castle, Verde Canyon Railroad and Tuzigoot National Monument.
