Flagstaff, Arizona
It is believed
that Flagstaff was named for a lone pine tree standing in an open valley, which was used
in the July 4, 1876 Centennial celebration as a flagpole, and later was a landmark for
pioneers. This energetic home to Northern Arizona University is
surrounded by breathtaking natural wonders and offers year round
attractions. Outdoor adventures include the Grand Canyon, Oak Creek
Canyon and Sedona, Sunset Crater extinct volcano, Verde Valley Historic
Railroad trips, Lowell Observatory where the planet Pluto was
discovered, Meteor Crater, Tuzigoot National Monument and Indian ruins
at Wupatki and Walnut Canyon National Monuments. Other attractions
include golf, the Symphony Orchestra, Snowbowl Ski Resort, the downtown
Historic Railroad District and antique shopping.
