Espanola, New Mexico
Founded in 1598,
Espanola was the first capital of New Mexico. It became a trading center in the 1870s when
a narrow-gauge railroad was built, the "Chili Line", running to Colorado.
Espanola is centrally located to several of the eight Northern Indian Pueblos, including
Nambe, Pojoaque, San Ildefonso, San Juan, and Santa Clara, the Mission of Tesuque,
Picuris, an Taos. It is also near Santa Cruz Lake.
