Douglas, Arizona
Founded in 1901 on the Mexican
border as a site for annual ranch roundups, the town is now a center
for tourism, commerce and agriculture, as well as a nationally known
bird watching area. Attractions include many historic buildings, local
ghost towns, and sight-seeing in nearby Agua Prieta, Mexico. Of
interest are several prehistoric archeological sites nearby, plus more
recent remains of an 18th century Spanish presidio and the
19th century Fort Bowie National Historic Site. The
nearby San Bernardino Ranch National Historic Landmark was the home of
Texas Ranger and Cochise County sheriff John Slaughter, and shares the
site with a 2,300-acre National Wildlife Refuge of marshlands and
riparian forests.
