Camp Verde, Arizona
Founded
in 1866 amid mountains straddling the beautiful Verde River, this
friendly small town is rich in history, and offers a wide variety of
activities such as beautiful, well-maintained hiking trails, fishing and
swimming in the Verde River, and a casino. Fort Verde State Park
offers a museum exhibiting military, pioneer and Native American
artifacts. Some of the original structures have been restored and
furnished in period. Montezuma's Castle National Monument
showcases the well-preserved ruins of 12th and 13th century limestone
cliff dwellings. The 5-story Sinagua Indian dwelling 46 feet above
the flood plain is not accessible to tourists, but a self-guiding trail
offers good views and a scale model of the interior. Montezuma
Well is a detached segment of the monument featuring a limestone sink
hole almost 500 feet wide and 50 feet deep, with ancient
irrigation ditches dug 1200-1300 A.D. still visible. Cliff
dwellings and pueblos rim the site.
