Bisbee, Arizona

Established in 1880, and cradled in a valley in the Mule Mountains ninety miles southeast of Tucson, Bisbee was founded as a copper mining camp in the 1880s. The mines have closed, but Bisbee's late 19th century atmosphere and an excellent year-round climate have made it a popular tourist attraction and crafts center. Because it is so well preserved, it is a natural magnet drawing film companies.  Of particular interest is the Mining and Historical Museum  and Brewery Gulch formerly consisting of 47 saloons and gambling houses and considered "the liveliest spot between El Paso and San Francisco", which is now a collection of shops and art galleries.  Other activities include the Queen Mine Tour led by former miners down into the now inactive copper mine on the small battery-powered train. There are antique stores, art galleries, and restaurants. Bird watchers especially enjoy the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area (15 miles away) and Ramsey Canyon (25 miles away). Bisbee also has a delightful 1 1/2 hour guided walking tour.
