The first settlers arrived in Bernalillo in 1698, descendants of Bernal Diaz del Castillo, chronicler of Hernando Cortes conquest of Mexico. It is still to a large extent a Spanish and Native American farming community located to the north of Albuquerque along the Rio Grande.
